ENRICHMENT ELECTIVES POLICY & GUIDELINES

32:40 Enrichment Electives Policy           (10-4-91; rev 5-21-97)
32:41 Enrollment Guidelines:
32:41:10 * Enrichment Electives may be taken by Years I and II medical students.
32:41:20 * A student may enroll in any number of Enrichment Electives in a given semester subject to space-availability after all other students have had the opportunity to enroll in at least one.
32:41:30 * Enrichment Elective experiences may not be used to reduce the 33 week requirement for elective course work.
32:42 Enrichment Electives should augment and enhance the regular curriculum, but not duplicate its content.
32:43 Proposals for Enrichment Elective experiences will conform to the
Enrichment Electives Guidelines.
32:44 The Curriculum Committee will authorize all Enrichment Electives for one semester only prior to their offering.
32:45 No credit will be given for Enrichment Electives.
32:46 Faculty are encouraged to forward information to Student Records regarding the outstanding contributions of students to the educational experience of an Enrichment Elective for inclusion in the students’ records.
32:47 Enrichment Electives Guidelines            (10-3-91)
32:47:10 Enrichment Electives provide creative educational opportunities outside the regular curriculum by which students may explore and develop their interests in medicine.
32:47:20 Enrichment Electives should be designed for the experience level of students enrolled in Years I and/or II of the curriculum.
32:47:30 If the course director of an Enrichment Elective believes that students should have a particular knowledge or experiential base before participating in the Enrichment Elective, that prerequisite should be explicitly stated on the proposal form.
32:47:40 Enrichment Electives should augment and enhance the regular curriculum, but not duplicate its content.
32:47:50 Credit will not be given for participation in Enrichment Electives, although faculty are encouraged to forward to Student Records information regarding the outstanding contributions of students to the educational experience of an Enrichment Elective for inclusion in the students’ records.
32:47:60 The design of the Enrichment Elective is determined by the course director. It may take any format best suited to the presentation of the content (e.g., seminar, independent study, lecture, bedside teaching). It is hoped that Enrichment Electives will provide some variation to students' regular classroom experiences.
32:47:70 A proposal that describes the educational activities and objectives for an Enrichment Elective, and an estimate of the total time required to participate in the Enrichment Elective, will be submitted to the Curriculum Committee for approval. A written description of the experience will be attached to the proposal form.
32:47:80 Enrichment Electives may be offered at any time that does not conflict with courses or examination times scheduled in Semesters 1, 2, 3 and 4. It would be advisable to refer to the weekly course schedules for Years I and II to determine optimal times. If possible, course directors are encouraged to set meeting times with the students who will participate in the Enrichment Elective. Enrichment Electives may be offered during scheduled recess periods.
32:47:90 A student may enroll in any number of Enrichment Electives in a given semester subject to space-availability after all other students have had the opportunity to enroll in at least one. (12-4-91)
