The unique concerns of pediatrics as a medical discipline are: 1) the period of life between conception and the first month of life, loosely termed perinatology; 2) the fact that children are growing and developing constantly, which results in unique physiological, biochemical, molecular, pathological and psychosocial considerations; and 3) the period of life known as adolescence with its characteristic physiologic and psychologic changes. The objectives of the department are to provide all students of medicine, from freshmen in medical school to the accomplished physician, an opportunity to learn our best understanding of health and disorders in relation to the above concerns. We also have as a goal the contribution of new knowledge by appropriate research activities and the application of all available knowledge by models of health care. These objectives are achieved by the following list of courses, by active participation in regular postgraduate programs, and by the research and clinical activities in the department.
See Electives Manual for course descriptions.
