UNIVERSITY ANIMAL CARE

Susan E. Wilson-Sanders, D.V.M., M.S., Director

University Animal Care (UAC) is the organization that provides services for care and use of all animals used for teaching and research at the University. The Unit reports to the Office of the Vice President for Research.

The animal facility of the Arizona Health Sciences Center is located on the first floor of the Basic Sciences Building and houses all animals used by the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing, as well as the Cancer Center. The facility has been continuously accredited by the prestigious Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International since 1969. Six veterinarians and a staff of trained laboratory animal technologists and technicians provide high quality animal care.

University Animal Care staff and faculty are available to assist and train investigators, research technicians and students on proper methods of animal handling and use. Expertise in the selection of specific animal models is provided to investigators, thus eliminating unnecessary use of animals. All those who care for or use animals must receive training which is mandated by the Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service Policy, thus ensuring that all those who work with animals can do so in the most humane manner possible. A Handbook for animal care and use is available which provides detailed information on the regulations and policies affecting animal research here at the University of Arizona. Copies of the Handbook can be obtained by contacting the UAC office (520) 626-6702. We encourage students to come tour our facilities and receive a copy of the Handbook. Please call ahead for an appointment.

Federal and local policy requires that all research, teaching and/or testing protocols involving the use of animals must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The IACUC, as well as the staff of UAC is involved in the assurance that all animals receive humane treatment. Concern for the welfare of animals, plus recognition of the need for quality biomedical research and education are the primary objectives of UAC.
