Arizona Health Sciences Library (http://www.ahsl.arizona.edu)

Gary Freiberger, B.A., M.L.S., Director

The Arizona Health Sciences Library (AHSL) is Arizona’s largest and most comprehensive health sciences library, providing access to current biomedical information resources for students and faculty of the University of Arizona, and to health care providers and consumers statewide. The library is an integral part of the Arizona Health Sciences Center complex. It is open 24 hours every day, except Christmas and New Year's Day.

The collections and services of AHSL are designed to meet the needs of students and faculty working in a rapidly changing knowledge-based health sciences environment, where access to the latest information is critical. The library has an impressive print collection of journal literature and monographs in biomedicine, and the Digital Library provides access to thousands of electronic resources, many of which are full-text
e-journals.

Educational Services offers classes and orientations to assist students in locating, using, evaluating, and managing their own information resources. The Information Technology Center supports the curriculum-based needs of faculty and students, and consists of a computer lab and classrooms, an audiovisual collection, and specialized multimedia workstations. Information Services assists library users in locating the information they need quickly and effectively. Public access computers are available for research. Support is also provided for those using personal digital assistants (PDAs).

State-of-the-art computer and communications technology is used to deliver the library’s information resources to sites statewide at the point of need, whether at the bedside, the laboratory or classroom, or at home. The library facility provides ample comfortable areas for individual and group study, all of which are equipped with Internet connectivity. Also housed in the library facility is the Arizona Telemedicine Program’s Warren Street Clinic and the Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center of the College of Pharmacy.

AHSL is a founding member of the Arizona Health Information Network, Inc. (AZHIN), a statewide consortium of over 30 hospitals, clinics, and other health care/health education institutions and organizations. Through AZHIN, AHSL provides access to major biomedical and clinical information resources. The library is also a member of the nationwide medical library network founded by the National Library of Medicine and serves as the designated resource library for Arizona through the Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library Service.

Selected AHSL Vital Statistics: 214,500 print volumes
