The MD-MPH Dual Degree Program is offered jointly by the College
of Medicine and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of
Public Health. The emphasis of the MD-MPH Dual Degree program is
on Clinical Leadership. It is anticipated that graduates will
be leaders in a wide variety of clinical and public health
settings. The MD-MPH program is designed to give students an
exposure to public health, prevention and clinical issues
they will encounter as health care leaders, and provide a
framework for problem solving and implementing effective health
programs.
Eligibility and Admissions Process:
Medical Students accepted to or currently enrolled in the
University of Arizona College of Medicine are eligible to apply
for the MD-MPH Program. Newly accepted medical students, and
students who are completing their first or second year of
medical school (if they have taken the requisite MPH classes with their
cohorts) may apply.
In addition to acceptance to medical school, applicants must
complete the
on-line
application required by
Mel and
Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health. The admissions
requirements can be found on the MEZACOPH Website:
http://www.publichealth.arizona.edu/StudentResources/RequirementsDeadlines.aspx#MPH
The application uses the SOPHAS process, and is located at:
http://www.sophas.org/index.cfm. MD-MPH Dual Degree applicants
may submitt , MCAT
scores in lieu of the GRE exam.
In
addition to the SOPHAS application requirements, applicants to
the MD-MPH Dual Degree program will have at least one interview
with faculty or staff of the program.
The application deadline for the MD-MPH Dual Degree Program is
March 30.
For further information please contact Hildi Williams at
626-2352 or Hal Strich, Associate Program Director at 626-0671.
Please note: The MD-MPH Dual Degree Program is not a
“back door” into medical school. Applicants must be accepted to
or enrolled in the University of Arizona College of Medicine in
order for their applications to be considered.
Curriculum:
The MD-MPH Curriculum includes the five “Core” MPH classes;
Epidemiology, Health Administration and Policy, Biostatistics,
and Environmental and Occupational Health and Social and
Behavioral Sciences. One public health class is taken each
semester during the first two years of medical school in
addition to the medical school curriculum
During the third year, MD-MPH students continue to remain
enrolled as medical students while they take remaining MPH Core and
elective classes during the first semester, and complete their
MPH internship during the second semester. They then return to
the traditional medical school rotation curriculum for their
last two years. Some students, particularly those with previous
public health courses at the University of Arizona, have chosen
to accelerate the program.
An
Evening Seminar Series is offered most semesters as an informal
gathering of all the students in the MD-MPH program to spend
time together with a speaker and have an opportunity to
interact with each other.
The MD-MPH Dual Degree Program will be offered on the Phoenix
Campus. Details are still being worked out. Students
interested in the Phoenix program should contact
